Summer Break is Here…
and the Peace Girls are giving back!
Pitching in…
What do you think of when you look back on summer breaks? Exams are done, and your next class is months away... Many of us associate this time with family vacations and time in the sun.
To be sure, the students in Togo are also looking forward to a reprieve from their daily schedules, but their breaks may look a little different than in other parts of the world. Many of them will spend time in the sun, but they will also be pitching in on their family's farms, growing corn, millet, or cotton.
And helping on farms is not the only way that Togolese students pitch in during their free time. As early as 2018, Peace Sisters has reported on the initiative the Peace Girls regularly take to show appreciation for their good fortune.
The Peace Girls regularly organize themselves to improve their city!
The Ripple Effect...
Completely of their own volition, the girls in our program often organize themselves into groups and show up at hospitals, schools and other government buildings to help improve the grounds. More such events recently occurred at a local school and at a pediatric hospital in Dapaong.
Peace Sisters' primary focus has always been to pay the school fees for girls who face a financial barrier to continuing their studies. This assistance is life changing for the individual girls who benefit directly from our program, but it also ripples out indirectly into many other facets of Togolese life.
Over a lifetime, girls who are educated will be better equipped to look out for their families, will contribute more to the local economy, and will have the confidence to take on leadership roles in their community. And in the short term, the spirit of community building is thriving amongst the Peace Girls in the form of volunteerism, which also leads to a feeling of ownership in their local institutions.
