A New Computer Lab!
A Basic Prerequisite...
Peace Sisters now supports 30 girls who have graduated from high school and moved on to college or vocational schools. With this achievement has come the need to continually address the new challenges that the girls are facing.
It's not uncommon for a middle or high school in Togo to function without electricity. Sunlight illuminates the chalkboard, and there is nowhere to plug in a computer. So where will a student learn to type up that paper she'll need to submit once she gets to college?
Thanks to a grant from Friends of Togo this year, Peace Sisters was able to create a new computer lab in Dapaong, and hopefully now the Peace Girls will feel more confident as they pursue their dreams!
442 Girls from 16 Schools were invited for computer skills trainings over the summer break!
The Friends of Togo funds were used specifically to buttress our new tutoring program that Peace Sisters piloted in Feb-May 2022 in response to declining academic success rates (attributed to Covid-19) and to provide computer skills training for 442 Peace Girls who attend 16 schools in the Dapaong environs.
We procured 5 Micro Ordinateur HP Pro 300 G3 computers and 4 HP LaserJet Pro M130FW printers that were sourced from IDS Technologie in Lomé on 25 April 2022. The equipment was transported to Dapaong and 5 tables/chairs were built by a local carpenter so the new computer lab would be functional in time for the school vacation.
The following table shows the number of schools/girls who have been invited to participate in computer trainings in the coming months:
The computer lab will also be available for tutors as they prepare for our expanded tutoring program that will likely run from November-May in the coming 2022-23 school year.
Results and Impacts of Project Funds:
The creation of a computer lab in Dapaong has impacted the education of local girls in both qualitative and quantitative ways:
1. 442 girls have access to a computer lab that will often be available for the girls and their tutors during the normal business hours of Monday-Friday from 8am-12pm and 3pm-5pm.
2. Educational Achievement will be affected as girls can more confidently approach their coursework as they reach higher levels of education where basic computer literacy is a prerequisite.
3. Life Skills will be affected by girls’ ability to access the internet and thereby potentially apply for further opportunities worldwide.
